By the time Swan Wave arrived (33rd of the 41 Maiden Collection Sculptures) it seemed I just couldn’t stop myself from turning every piece into an animal of some kind. It was August and a summer spent in admiration of the incredible bird life here in the Roaring Fork Valley was beginning to leave a lasting impression. When the time came to tackle the odd-looking, and slightly fearsome, rough block I took great advantage from having enjoyed ample time with which to ponder just exactly what I was going to do with it. I had long decided this unwieldy block was destined to become a wave, and as things turned out it was to be the last wave of The Maiden Collection to be carved; a family within collection that includes The Demure One, Things One and Two, Elk Mountain Bowl, Guin and Son, and Genesis… where, of course it, all began. I suppose that the end result could be viewed as a bowl or a wave, but from the very beginning I was struck by the similarities between this block and the block that produced The Demure One, so in her honor I decided to cut a hole through it – and these remain the only two pieces within the 41 sculptures of The Maiden Collection to include holes of any kind. But what clinched the piece as a swan was the peculiar eye that began to appear as I worked the wave around its full 180 degrees. Once I had the eye positioned the rest fell neatly into place. As with my Collection Series marble sculpture, you’ll find Swan Wave’ serial number, 120806, cut into the underside of her base. And, as with all my carvings, my banker mark (sometimes known as mason’s mark) proudly chiseled right alongside it.
