Mabel, Spirit of the Stone; The Maiden Collection, Colorado Yule Marble Sculpture by Martin Cooney

Without Mabel’s vital contribution during the early stages of The Maiden Collection I can safely say that the whole concept of developing a Curvilinear body of work would never have materialized.  For in sculpting this piece an entirely new approach to my carving was to take place without my ever knowing it:  it was at the moment that I hit down with my hammer and blew out the entire central core of this piece – with a single blow, that my newly acquired format of creating Direct Method Reductionist Marble Sculpture was born.   From this point in time, and as the block that was to become Coliseum came hurtling out from within the heart of Mabel, I instinctively knew that the fine art of splitting marble, and sculpting in collaboration with the resulting blocks, was the life for me.   Not only did Mabel show me the way in regards to Splitting Marble, she has managed somehow to personally combine just about every visual aspect of my particular brand of Direct Method Curvilinear Reductionist Sculpture; from her rough-hewn, broken, rocky-top roughness, to her smooth silky curves, to her wafer-thin bowl, Mabel has is all – and much, much more.
