I carved Ships in the Night during the summer of 2006, and it has occupied a variety of locations down through the years – all of them outside.  For several years it served to divide, and calm, the exuberant waters of the Woody Creek as it flooded into the Birdhaven Studio Sculpture Garden. Consequently it boasts a rich Kansas Crème trademark ‘Cotswold’ patina, a rough-edged bottom, along with a budding colony of moss on its shady side, and around the water line.

Since 2017 it has taken residence outside the KMJ Cooney Studio Gallery at 111 Aspen Airport Business Center, Suite D – directly across from the airport and fronting Highway 82 – where it may be seen holding back the snow and ice in wither, and bathed with flowers all summer long.

Ships in the Night’s meaning I suppose is up for interpretation, but I always thought it sent a message of co-operation and hope: that though when all said and done, perhaps it is the companionship of other ships as we glide through our ever evolving life. It’s just a thought.
