Thing Two and Thing One, “Port” and “Starboard“, present themselves, to my mind, as one and the same sculpture.  Not only were these two highly mobile carvings close neighbors within the Maiden Collection  slab for over 30 million years,  they both tumbled into the world encased in near identical rough blocks.

Laying side-by-side for such a very long time has imbued them with a rich tapestry of matching swirls and marking,  telling of Colorado Yule marble’s turbulent past.   In fact,  when the three pieces; The Demure One, Things One and Two… were briefly displayed together as Wave Power, a single three-part installation,  their shared geological lineage was clear for all to see.   Which is precisely why I chose to carve these three pieces the way I did.

Mesmerized as I was at this new and lively material, I was soon lured into exploring deeper and deeper into its enticing and mysterious ways.   Masques,  bowls and standing stones… all were yet to come, thanks to these two pranksters.  Moving them is a cinch by the way.  And so, as they are indeed “Carved for Full Immersion in the Real World”,  and once  you  let Things One and Two loose to roam your environs, you too may expect them to start popping up in the most unlikely of places.
