As The Maiden Collection blocks dwindled down to the last remaining few I decided to carve a sculpture that would pay my respect to the nature of not just the stone, but the process involved in creating my Collection Series Marble Sculpture, which is why Coliseum retains the actual holes drilled to accommodate my one inch plug and feather wedges.

Coliseum brings to mind the many formerly regal and magnificent, now somewhat severely scavenged, Roman amphitheaters dotted across Europe, the Middle East and North Africa.  All ancient buildings fascinate me, but scrambling around these vast arenas has managed to bring me closer to what life must have been like for ordinary citizens back when; for that is what these massive masonry stadiums were all about; just ordinary people passing the time of day with an hour or two of good, if not always wholesome, entertainment.

The name Coliseum popped into my mind, along with memories of exploring the labyrinth of below ground tunnels, dungeons and animal quarters deep below the arena floor of Rome’s most iconic building. What began as my attempt to recognize the vital role splitting had played in producing 41 sculptures from the original Maiden Collection Slab resulted in this brutally strong bowl. Really, this baby will be around for a very long time, as to all-intent-and-purpose, Coliseum is practically indestructible.  My guess is that it will be around for many, many centuries – pretty much like its 2,000 year-old namesake.
