Long Boat / The Maiden Collection / Colorado Yule Marble

22.5 x 11.5 x 6.5″ / 17.8 lbs / SN120402

Of all my Maiden Collection hand carved marble bowls, Long Boat perhaps best exemplifies the long, sleek, majestic curvy lines of my Curvilinear ‘Maritime’ Sculpture.  For bowls come in all shapes, forms and sizes, and may represent a maternal nest, or strident beast, or abstract notion. Maritime sculptures such as, pictured below, Magellan,  Sailboat Tempest, and of course  Titanic  therefore project notions of maritime craft, in all their splendor and variety: from Noah’s Ark to Kenai Skiff !

At the outset my mandate for this carving was to sculpt it as long, lovely and as swift of hull as only an ocean going craft can be, until I felt that I had captured the powerful prow of a determined vessel hellbent on plowing through whatever necessary in order to reach her port.  In fact, it was this very concept that drove me to carve Dreadnought, pictured below, to portray this exact same thrilling maritime spectacle; that of a sleek and powerful vessel plowing through the ocean waves.
