Elk Mountain Bowl is not actually a bowl at all, at least not in the sense of my hand carved marble bowls.  It was in fact named after the Rocky Mountain Elk Range ‘bowls’ that hearty Coloradans ski regularly, and it must be said, with such audacious wild abandon. Elk Mountain Bowl is presented as a tribute to the nature of the mountains, and their perfect adaption to the particular demands of the sort of world class skiing to be found right here in my own very own back yard.

I’m not sure quite when it was during the carving process that I spotted what I considered to be the makings of a pretty decent bowl run.  It was the huge crown of raw, rocky granite intrusion that first sparked my attention. From there my eyes wandered to the rather dreamy marking deep within the milky white marble.  It was then that I noticed the similarity between this little fleck of stone, and the effect of skiing these mighty mountains – these alpine bowls.  From this point on my focus became to create a skier’s memory box of Colorado Rocky Mountain deep powder thrills.  For the deeper you stare into this Curvilinear sliver of marble, the more runs you are able to pick out.  Place it outside, or in a sunny window, and you will also be able to monitor conditions as mountain shadows glide imperceptibly across the snow in order to pick out your next best run of the day – as one does at the top of a particularly epic bowl; and away we go, of for another stunning lap.
