I carved Green Man well over year before he moved into the tailor-made basin.  I had always intended that he would grow into a fine water feature one day, and that day came when he finally made the transition to a fully self-contained solar powered fountain. For quite a time, immediately after I carved him he whiled away his days in the shallows of the Sculpture Garden’s Woody Creek Water.  After which he weathered a long Rocky Mountain winter, by which time his patina was already gathering a momentum of its own.

As with all the solar fountains Green Man interacts with whatever sunlight is available, with a stream forceful enough to travel the length of his trough, to the merest little spit of water, delivered with a comic sense of timing, that never ceases to amuse onlookers.  Not only is Green Man fully water self-sufficient, but a recess cut into his back accommodates his solar panel, or you can place the panel some distance away in a sunny spot.

Green Man adapts easily to life as a solar or regular fountain, or I suppose you could wire him up to do both. I personally prefer solar as then I get to see his often comical interplay with the light. And it’s not just full sun that gets him going, even on quite cloudy days he is busy sprinkling water throughout the whole length of his trough. In fact, there is never a dull moment during daylight hours as far as Greeny is concerned. Boy does he have fun startling the birds who flock around both him and his basin right as the sun bursts out from behind a big dark cloud! You too can shock and amaze people by casually casting your shadow over the solar panel – you can have some fun being Green Man’s voice command, if you see what I mean. It takes people ages to realize that you are actually making Greeny stop and start on demand.

So there you have it – a real interactive sculpture is Green Man. Rough, tough and a little bit gruff, he never the less entertains one and all at the drop of a hat. And best of all, as the years go on, his nicely rustic patina, along with his ever bushy beard, mop top thatch of hair and all the rest of him… well, you could say that he knows the ropes by now and is so easy to own and maintain that a mere rinse of his bowl now and then, along with a ready supply of nice fresh water – just mist him down and get water to his soil – is all the help, aid and assistance he will need, and that’s about it.

Currently Green Man sits immediately outside the windows of the KMJ Cooney Studio Gallery, 111 Aspen Airport Business Center, Suite D, directly across from Aspen Airport and fronting Highway 82.
