~ Small is Lovely ~

Few of my marble carvings tip the scales as light as the 14.2 lbs. that ‘Duality’ weighed when on completion I sat her down to see if she broke ‘Pearl’s 11.4 lbs. She didn’t quite manage that, but came very close. So, in all realty this, the 23rd Liberty Collection Sculpture – and 90th in The COLLECTION SERIES, is just about as light, portable and carved for full immersion in the real world as anything I have ever carved. Which makes it ever so easy to simply pick up and move around at your convenience – upon a whim. You can enjoy ‘Duality’ in any room or location you wish. Her petite display bowl accommodates earrings, rings, wristwatches, necklaces and bracelets, saving you the discomfort and annoyance of misplacing them following a wonderful romantic evening on the town. Simply place your treasures in the bowl and they will be safe and sound, come the morning.

As a stone sculptor I have a tendency to carve big due to the nature and scale of the material I so love and admire, marble. It arrives in my workshop as a rough block already crudely shaped for the purpose via my ‘Split and Carve’ technique, and within its jagged boundaries the finished sculpture awaits my Reductionist ‘tools, training and technique’ to release it into the world. And as such, these rough blocks tend to be of a size and proportion that favors large over small. I must consciously control the splitting process to provide the smaller dainty blocks necessary for carvings such as ‘Duality’.

Along with her category as a bowl, ‘Duality’ qualifies also as a new and emerging Window Sculpture, as the interplay with natural light is quite something to behold. Those wafer thin ‘sails’ collect, absorb and refract all available light in a quite spectacular manner, causing her mood to morph and shift throughout the day. At night a candle placed behind her will provide a beautiful flickering opaque light show. Or, alternatively, her bowl is shallow and flat enough to accommodate a candle – to dramatic effect, also.

In short: ‘Duality’ was carved to live alongside you as a COLLECTION SERIES Object of Beauty – not just to sit on some shelf, gathering dust. She’s tougher than she looks, by the way. I make sure of that with my longstanding obsession with ‘Structural Integrity’ – a tried and tested set of principles stemming all the way back to my Banker Masonry days and drawing upon my 26 years’ stone carving experience. Just be careful when moving her. Pick her up and hold her close to you, then walk her wherever you wish. As with all of my signature Curvilinear Marble Sculpture, she will positively glow in any sunny window in any room, in any home, including yours.

And finally; those two billowy complementing ‘sails’, when illuminated with direct sunlight, transmit ever-so-slightly different hues; an effect that is difficult for an amateur photographer such as myself to capture. But subtlety is the name of the game with ‘Duality’. From my experience, it takes two to tango, as it were. And in life opposites tend to attract; as with these two symbolic characters holding each other close, each bringing the to the other support and all-important variety to their quite obviously strong union. (Remind you of anyone?)

As with all of my signature COLLECTION SERIES Marble Sculpture, ‘Duality’ displays my Mark, Serial Number and relevant information carved and etched on the underside of her base. I don’t believe in marring the carved surface with such necessities, and apart from the odd Mark, here and there, I leave all carved surfaces suitably undefaced.
