First of the ship-shaped, or Maritime bowls, Magellan proved something of a revelation, and plowed the way for the entire series of the boat-like vessels that were to follow.

Carving those big sweeping curvilinear lines proved a pure pleasure, opening doors to ideas that I would explore with later carvings such as Longboat, Titanic, Swan Wave and Mabel.  Magellan’s sweeping curves were carved to dominate from every angle.  As with Birdseye, another of my signature Hand Carved Marble Bowls, Magellan was to sell almost immediately upon completion, and therefore these few photos are all I have to remember her by.
