Genesis was actually the very first piece of The Maiden Collection to be carved.  In taking a sliver of a piece of the rough block that I was to carve into the collection’s 41 sculptures, I had no preconceived ideas as just what I would find.   And so imagine my delight at discovering the maze of intricate swirling patterns laying deep within the ten ton slab of Colorado Yule Marble.

Of course little did I know, or care, at the time of the challenges and difficulties associated with carving such a complex mixture of what is essentially granite – or chert – and pure white marble.  What’s more, this was the first time I was to become acquainted with the fixed angle of the intrusions/inclusions.  For throughout the block, and every subsequent Colorado Yule Marble rough block before or since has these very same striking markings.

They are caused by the Yule marble seam being sloped at the exact same angle as you see here, about 30 to 35 degrees I would say.  And in the photo of the Maiden Slab as it is in the process of being split in the picture above the set of quarry images, you can clearly see that the block is composed of three sections – that of the ‘Brutal Belt’, as I call it, due to all of those massive lumps of chert; the Intermediate Belt, where the pure white marble is mixed with swirling ribbons of soft, crushed matter; and the Pure White band that you can see at the right-hand side of the slab and running its entire length.

But  I love this piece for what it is – a small slice of pure geological time, as well as the first carving of the rest of my life.  For little did I know it, but immediately upon Genesis’s completion, and as a direct result of this one carving, Curvilinear Marble Sculpture … and my Marble Collection Series …  were born.
