~ THE COLLECTION SERIES Carving No. 96 ~

‘Feeding Frenzy’ was split from a corner of The Liberty Slab’s second phase, or more precisely, the second half of the block I split in two at the outset of The Liberty Collection’s carving process. Which is significant, this being the collection’s 29th carving, in that I have now gained sufficient knowledge through experience with the block to know its characteristics, traits and ‘personality’, to the point that as I split each rough block from the slab, I eagerly anticipate stretching the inherent proclivities within the block to match and complement my own ever-growing ambitions. The result: well, you can see for yourself. Things are developing very nicely down at the historic Liberty Building, out here in the heart of the Prairie, deep within the rolling Flint Hills of eastern Kansas.

In fact, I am now at the point whereby I split so ‘intentionally’ that I have adopted a two-stage process. For, once the plug and feather wedges have done their job with the big spilt from the slab, I go on to further split the block on my banker in the workshop, adopting a newly developed technique to produce several rough blocks – each one enhancing and embellishing upon the creative shapes and textures inherent within this primary rough block. And best of all, with such precise splitting I can fashion shapes that previously I could only happen across by chance. And so, this new splitting technique is proving a real game changer, as well as a vital new component to my Direct Method Split and Carve marble sculpture arsenal of options.

So, take a look at this, my latest COLLECTION SERIES marble carving: what do you see? Well, obviously, I saw a feeding frenzy, but what else? Do you see a flock of birds, perhaps fighting over a delicious fish? Or perhaps a school of fish fighting over … a delicious fish? Or maybe something else? Well, that’s the point with my style of what I call “Evocative Abstraction”, as opposed to pure abstraction in the traditional sense. My carvings evoke something, that’s for sure, but different people see different things, and the title is just a suggestion. It certainly looks like a frenzy of some sort – with all that swirling action. But that’s the thing about Pareidolia, it’s the Art of Seeing What’s Not There, which if you click here, you will discover is the ability that we humans have to see faces in cloud. It is, I believe, a vital part of what makes us human; that is, our wild, unique and unpredictable …. imagination.

It actually doesn’t matter what you see in ‘Feeding Frenzy’. If its form pleases the eye, triggers the mind and adorns your environment, then, who cares? As with all my COLLECTION SERIES marble sculpture, it is easy to pick up and move around, allowing you to enjoy the frenzy of swirls and curves wherever you wish. Simply clear your path, pick it up, hold close to your body and walk the piece to whichever corner of your world you wish to adorn. Strong, direct light absolutely loves my signature Curvilinear Marble Sculpture, so bear that in mind … the stronger and more direct light, the better.

‘Feeding Frenzy’ carries its name and serial number, along with my signature and personal Mark, carved and etched on the underside of its base. It is also completely impervious to UV rays, rain, wind, hail, sleet or snow; a little mild soapy water will bring the polished marble surface back to life, so don’t be afraid to set it free in the wilds of your garden or patio if you feel so inclined. This is a piece of sculpture that was carved to be viewed in the round, so it looks intriguing, appealing and enticing from all angles, but I am sure you will adopt a favorite profile once you are familiar with its wily ways.
