Camaiore, Market Town Extraordinaire
I’d heard they held a regular Saturday market over in Camaiore while staying at Da Pio B&B in neighboring Pietrasanta, and like most, well all the tips Maria gave me, this one turned out to be a sheer delight. Laid out in a similar fashion to Pietrasanta the town center is comprised of huge rectangular blocks of similar sized buildings, allowing their facades to create a curtain effective either side of the very long, extremely straight streets. Today’s tour takes us through those arrow straight streets. But in stark contrast to the tranquil emptiness of Casoli, Camaiore is positively alive with, well, life! And not just human life either: goats, rabbits, cows, cocks… you name it. Fruits, vegetables – mounds of them. Displays… practically every edible horticultural example you could possibly wish for. I’ll leave you to your thoughts as you scroll down though the market, but if you wish to hear what I have to say on the matter just click the link below ↓ Enjoy your saunter…oh, and for the full effect don’t forget to click on The Bells; VERY LOUD they are indeed too !

Camaiore, Not Your Common or Garden Farmer’s Market / Rogue Carver on the Loose in Italy
Camaiore began life as a Roman settlement in the year 190 BC and has remained an important trading center ever since. During medieval times it served as a key stop along the Franciscan pilgrimage route to Rome, and today hosts a market that draws from across the region. On crossing the first of two gates that mark the entrance to the old city my initial impression was that I had stumbled across a craft fair as eager young people busied themselves with various projects, but as I passed through the second gate I stumbled upon a scene that spoke more of a gardening show – or contest, for the large displays filled the square. These were however merely the first such examples – the entire town formed a quilted patchwork of expertly assembled rectangular themed exhibits showcasing the health and variety of locally grown produce. However it was the bells that grabbed my attention when they suddenly swung into action with a raucous rolling peel that packed a punch that I could feel in my chest. The whole town was alive with performers of one sort or another; basket weavers, jugglers, street musicians……..click here
