‘Windward’ presented herself as the 26th Sculpture in The Liberty Collection immediately following a brief restpite in proceedings once I reached the half-way point in the three-ton slab of Colorado Yule Marble, having split the slab right down the middle the previous summer of 2025, at the outset of carving this the fourth addition to my signature COLLECTION SERIES Marble Sculpture Portfolio.

The significance of such a timely break was that it allowed me to take stock of the direction in which my sculptural journey had taken me, because once The COLLECTION SERIES carving process is underway the sculptures arrive with a regularity that leaves little time for contemplation – which is the whole point. One carving after another is produced in such a manner that each carries a trace of previous sculptures and holds a clue to which way the new and evolving collection is headed. In fact, the ongoing process of splitting and carving with little or no time to reflect is a vital element of my approach to Direct Method Carving.

But once the timely half-way point had arrived, with the carving of ‘Fido’s Still Got it’, in late February, I decided that a time for some thoughtful self-reflection was in order. The weather was truly awful! The days were dark and overcast, and what I needed was to put some concentrated thought into what I was going to do with ‘the other half’ of the once 6,000 lb. slab of marble. It was then, snuggled in at home, busily reviewing the existing Liberty Collection sculptures, while compiling the long-awaited COLLECTION SERIES Portfolio, that I determined to alter the manner with which I split the marble for the remainder of the series. Because, without really noticing it, a new ‘vertical’ aspect had imposed itself upon the The Liberty Collection that was sparked by the 16th sculpture, ‘Lofty Perch’ and ran through ‘Great Light Owl’, ‘Tipping Point’, ‘Vanishing Point’ and ‘Duality’ – all of which had been split from the The Liberty Slab with not a thought regarding the plane on which they would stand: so, what if I were to split the second half of the slab with verticality in mind? And that was it… the very point when I made the decision to split the slab with upright intentions in mind. Right off the bat, upon my return, ‘Windward’ showed up to point the way ahead, and what a magnificent example of the split and carve Direct Method she is.

~ The ‘Windward’ rough block told me all I needed to know on how to proceed with this evocatively pointy slice of marble ~

With the wind in her sails and her keel rolling to starboard, she looks as trim and sleek as a sloop can be. The moment I saw that tall point rising out of ‘Windward’s’ rough block I knew a sailboat was due to appear from out of the pure white marble that just seemed to lend itself to the idea. Beginning at the top I carefully worked my way down the sail – towards the bow, then along to the stern. I left an abundance of stone on the starboard side to bring maximum stability to a quite tippy-looking design. But from my perspective, although quite presentable in the round, this is really a sculpture carved to be viewed port side on. However, from the rear, she makes quite a sculptural statement, especially with translucent light from her port side flooding the marble with incredible ‘heavenly’ hues seldom seen outside of my favored Curvilinear Reductionist technique.

~ ‘Windward’s’ starboard side is definately the rear of the sculpture, but presents an attractive form nontheless ~

‘Windward’ is certainly a member of the growing number of window sculptures within The COLLECTION SERIES that are slim and tall enough to sit in a windowsill and glow, with magnificent luminescence filling her trim sails with light, she is sure to capture attention as she reflects the passage of daylight hours with a continuous performance to delight the eye. And in the evening, a simple spotlight on her will set the stage and breathe life into the sails in a whole new manner – something you have to witness in person to fully appreciate, as photos, no matter how hard I try, simply fail to capture this unique marble phenomenon with any justice. And neither will you have to worry about those pesky UV rays harming here – as marble is simply impervious to anything the sun can throw at her, even through glass. Extreme cold, extreme heat; they are all the same to her. Snow, hail, wind, you name it, marble will deal with it.
