Noah's Ark, The Maiden Collection, Colorado Yule Marble Hand Carved Bow by Martin Cooney

With his almost 20 lbs squeezed into such a tight footprint Noah’s Ark emits a confident air of compactness, and is emboldened by a certain degree of mystery hovering around perceived issues of stability.  Well, let me tell you however that, in regards to balance, this bowl is as stable as can be – thanks to the ample counterbalance that I secured into the base. Wobbly he is most definitely not!  And yet; that pitch, that keel !

The inspiration for this piece derived from a distinct childhood memory concerning a favorite attraction of mine located within the Blackpool Pleasure Beach, in North West England.  This immensely popular amusement park boasted a giant “Noah’s Ark” that , if memory serves, was prone to rock and roll, blow and scare its patrons around at will once it got them inside.

But what I loved about the Blackpool Ark however was that once captive to the relatively innocent facade (with pirates, skeletons and various charters yelling out insulting invites to enter “at your peril”) nothing on the inside made any sense at all, proportion, scale and perspective went out of the window, as it were: doors that looked normal shrank to midget sized when approached: floors rose up and morphed into walls: mirrors were glass and windows were mirrors – that kind of thing – it all served to play havoc with any sense of balance, or at times dignity. Joyfully legless by the end of it; it was after all what we called “the crazy house”. Once we were finished with this sort of giddiness we were off-and-away to the hall of mirrors, after which it would be the bumping cars, ghost cars, big dipper and big wheel.

And so it was that as the unlikeliness of this bowl began to present itself, with its precipitous lean and conforming shape, I soon began to think of it as a Noah’s Ark of my own.  For that lean is only possible due to the significant ballast hidden in this compact bowl’s tiny footprint.  Despite its improbable looking outline, this very white, very upright, compact bowl remains balanced no matter what sort of fruit is stowed aboard. As you will discover, is Oh so stable on the table that you too will think it a miracle; one of supreme balance, style and poise.
