~ Aspiration ~

‘Aspiration’, as the name implies, injects a sense of desire, ambition, focus and determination into any room or environment into which it is placed. The sense of movement is undeniably upward, forward and ad astra: to the stars! With its sweeping wings, delta-like formation and pivotal point thrusting aspiringly into the air, the compelling combination of dynamic energy is undeniable. This lovely piece of Colorado Yule marble is intent on capturing the eye from every direction – whether viewed from the front, the back, either side, above or below, the powerful statement remains the same: positive energy, encapsulated.

The translucent nature of the stone makes itself apparent via the sculpture’s uncanny ability to capture direct light, whether sun or spot light, and infuse The Yule with subtle hues and filtered rays screened through the marble itself, picking out ribbons and bands of golden stratifications lying within the carving’s bright white presence: to the point that, when placed in a sunny window, ‘Aspiration’ will continually morph and change hues, rewarding each glance with a different treat throughout the day.

~ Rough Block / Finished Carving ~

‘Aspiration’s completed design stems from the remarkably poignant rough block, that I split from The Liberty Collection Slab, that immediately suggested a carving dealing with, well, aspiration. And while that may sound obvious, my task was to utilize this unusually compelling pyramidical, sharp pointed and undeniably ambitious block of Yule to best advantage. Meaning: what to take out, and what to leave in. In the end, I decided that the angle and incline were well nigh perfect, so I set out to carve out the entire back and center of the block to create the delta winged shape it encapsulates today.

To give you some idea of the task involved in removing so much marble, the original rough block weighed 139 lbs., the finished carving tipped the scales at just 41.4 lbs. So, just under a hundred pounds of Colorado Yule Marble lay strewn around my workshop by the time I was finished.

The result, however, is a full-dimensional carving that can easily be picked up and moved around. If you can pick up a small child, you can pick up ‘Aspiration’. But this is the way with all my COLLECTION SERIES Marble Sculpture. This is my signature style. I take so much redundant material out of the carving that it becomes a cinch to move from one place to another. It even comes with its own solid wooden ‘forever box’, so that if you want to ship it, sell it, store it or take it somewhere, you can simply tuck it into its perfectly sized transporter, and away it goes. Like all my Curvilinear Marble Sculpture, ‘Aspiration’ just loves light: direct light of any kind. But the effect of little or no light produces an entirely contrasting effect. The marble becomes uniform and little or no translucence is to be seen. The Yule looks solid, almost severe, creating a strong, independent and impressive profile that, actually, makes an entirely different statement, and one pointing more toward defiance and determination. So, yes, ‘Aspiration’ is what you could rightly call … a moodier piece than most. But exactly which mood – is entirely up to you.
