As anyone who has ever carved marble will readily testify, there is something truly exceptional about this metamorphosed limestone that sets it apart from all other carving stones – but explaining just why that is the case, or what these remarkable attributes comprise of, well, that is an altogether more challenging task. Because carving marble is, for the most part, a most enjoyable and satisfying experience; it slices and pares, cuts and whittles like the proverbial charm. It possesses an innate spirit that both guides and thwarts the carver with subtle clues that reveal themselves as the carving process progresses.

Perhaps the best way to truly illustrate these remarkably subtle attributes is to create a sculpture that exposes all of these ethereal properties and presents them to the uninitiated through technical means – in this case, to carve the marble so thinly (extremely thinly) that these phenomenal traits are revealed for all the world to see: Ladies and Gentlemen, may I present ‘Thundercaps’; my attempt to share my knowledge of and love for marble, and in particular the extremely rare ‘Contact Metamorphosed’ marble that is Colorado Yule.

And so, when this beautiful piece of ultra bright white marble presented itself, I decided to hone my signature Curvilinear Reductionist Marble tendencies to new and previously ‘impossible’ heights. The challenge was to carve the walls so incredibly thinly that light would permeate and illuminate the glass-thin walls in a manner never seen before!  But please bear in mind: these ‘wafer thin’ walls are curved ‘in the round’; meaning that the curves roll in every direction. Hyperbolic, parabolic, Semi helix, double helix … they can all be discovered upon close inspection, with the interior and exterior faces of the walls separated by mere fractions of an inch.

The result: luminescence like you have never seen before. Marble as you have never seen before. A sculpture the like of which you have never seen before. A sculpture designed and carved to attract light from all angles. A carving to mirror the ever-changing and evolving light emanating from those tall, magnificent thundercaps we are all so used to seeing and marveling at their ever-evolving light show.

Thundercaps are the undisputed champions of the sky. No matter where you live, if you look up you will see them sailing magnificently by with a grace and beauty that defies words. Look at them long enough and you will be rewarded with a memorable sight. One minute the bright white canopy steals the show, then next turmoil erupts within its ample girth, with colors and hues vying for attention as the caps reach ever higher, and higher … and higher, until they appear to bump against the very sky itself. Such a show!

Well, now you can have your own marble ‘Thundercaps’ to entertain, beguile and inspire you from her perch in any south/southwest facing window. (You could place her in an easter-centric window, but I, personally, am more of a sunset guy, but I digress). Watch and behold; ‘Thundercaps’ will put on a show wherever she is luxuriously bathed in natural sunlight – turn your back for a moment, and when you see her again, she will have morphed into a new ‘mood’, just like her magnificent namesake way up in the sky.

And finally; that word, Thundercap. I know, it’s Thundercloud to most. But to me, these magnificent giants have always been Thundercaps. So, ‘Thundercap‘ she was christened, and Thundercap she will remain. It’s all about those brilliant white caps, under which a kaleidoscopic range of colors, rays and ever-changing moods and hues move with such grace, magnificence and grandeur across our planet’s wide open blue skies. A marvel they are, for sure.
