Vanishing Point / Web Page / COLLECTION SERIES MARBLE SCULPTURE by Martin Cooney / For Sale

A sleek, modern sculpture positioned on a circular black base, featuring a tall, elongated form with smooth surfaces, illuminated subtly from behind, set against flowing curtains.

Marble, a mysterious metamorphosed limestone, holds within it a secret that is seldom witnessed by even the most ardent marble lovers, and once it is revealed it is difficult to see this semi-precious stone the same way again. That is, as a solid dense block, like that of sandstone, granite and the entire slew of sedimentary and igneous ‘rock’ – all of which hold no translucency whatsoever. And the only way to release this mesmeric visual phenomenon is to carve the marble so very thin that light enters one side and exits through the other. This technical carving feat of confidence, born of skill and experience, illuminates the hidden mysteries of the marble to dramatic effect. Fortunately, this is the exact technique I have developed to create my signature COLLECTION SERIES Curvilinear Marble Sculpture.

And so, I present this tall, thin sliver of Colorado Yule, as testament to marble’s astonishing translucency, moody presence and distinctive ability to project a chameleon-like and ever-evolving presence into any room or location into which it is placed. For once you realize what the stone is up to, you will recognize the almost cryptic nature of the name I settled on – as material and form combine to shape shift this carving close to its perceived ‘Vanishing Point’.

When viewed face on, with strong light streaming through the marble from behind, the effect is that of an outline gradually dissolving into a cloud of opaque swirls and hues, as if the stone itself is in the process of morphing out of view. And viewed side-on, the ultra-slender profile almost blends completely into its surroundings. Yet when viewed from the reverse side to the translucent light show, one would struggle to connect the two surfaces to the same carving. For here we are presented with the familiar solid bright white marble surface so characteristic of traditional, non-Curvilinear sculpture so familiar to all of us.

In my attempt to portray the ethereal effect of all of this translucence I have included way more pictures than usual in this post, but no doubt they will still fall short of revealing the full effect emitted by the complex interplay of light and the interior of marble, but they should give you some idea of the magic that occurs. It really is extraordinary to see light drawing out an ever-changing and evolving show of color as it passes through 30-million-year-old stone. It’s not something you see every day, unless you make this, or any of my many Curvilinear marble sculptures, one of your prized possessions.

Be sure to place ‘Vanishing Point’ in direct light. This is what I call a ‘window sculpture’ and any sunny windowsill will endow ‘Vanishing Point’ with all she needs to put on a show; especially southern facing, although east for the morning or west for the sunset will work. Even indirect light will create quite a fascinating prospect. And with the sun going in and out from behind the clouds, the show is given a surreal, tantalizing effect, as the colors and hues melt and meld with one another throughout the day. At night, be sure to shine a strong spotlight towards her and remember to turn her regularly, as with each change of view you will be rewarded with a different sculpture, such is the dramatic nature of her tall Curvilinear form.

Weighing just 29 lbs., ‘Vanishing Point’ is a breeze to simply pick up and move around – just clear your path and hold her close to your body, as you would a small child. This way you can enjoy the show practically wherever you wish. And wherever you put her, if given sufficient light, she will feel … right at home.
