~ Who’s a Good Dog, then? ~
Although at the moment I am without a dog in my life, I have nonetheless spent over two decades fussing, exercising, feeding, playing with and admiring two quiet different canines; a ‘Heinz 57’ mongrel of distant Terrier heritage, and a decidedly ‘Pure Bred’ English Spaniel. And so, I know how the story goes with ‘Man’s Best Friend’. I am well acquainted with the story arc regarding a dog’s life, as of course many of us are. But this COLLECTION SERIES Marble Sculpture pertains to a particular moment towards the closing of a long and sincere friendship. You see, Fido is old now. Very old, indeed. Not all dogs live to this ripe old age, but he did. He made it to the point whereby he simply gets to sleep all day, or the greater part of it. He puts a great deal of thought into each foray away from his comfy pad, and often gives up or loses interest on the way, or increasingly, both at the same time.

In your mind’s eye, when you look at him, you can still see that tempestuous pup that used to run amok all day, playing with anything that caught his attention and cocking his head ever-so-slightly as the ways of the world presented themselves to his disbelieving eyes. You remember being mobbed by him as soon as you opened the door. But although Fido is still Fido, there isn’t a trace of puppyhood in him now. Now he is an old, old dog indeed, and this show of energy is meant for you. He heard you coming. Indeed, he knows what time you come home, and he’ll be darned if you’ll be left to re-enter your realm without a greeting at the door. That’s why he stirred himself early – to be ready and waiting your arrival. He’s been in something of a similar pose for a fair time now. But upon hearing those steps, the turning of a key, and even a blurred image through the glass, he’s almost sure that it is, actually, really, you. But he’s not completely convinced it’s you. It should be you. It nearly always is at about this time of day. But he’s pensive. That’s why his big (still) fluffy tail is tucked neatly around his leg.

Any moment now, his hopes and dreams will be fulfilled, and you will be reunited once and hopefully forever more. Wait. Wait, wait for it: this is the moment captured in ‘Fido’s Still Got It’, because he has! You can see it for yourself in that proud upright pose. That high, sniffing nose, that straight back, the intense stare. It’s still there. NO WAY would Fido let you come home and find him … sleeping. Perish the thought. Never!!!
This is one reason why I carved this piece, preferably to stand next to, near, or adjacent to the door, or at least against a wall. Because FSGI is not actually carved ‘in the round’, even though from almost any angle in almost 180 degrees, he surely does look that way. He is, in the true sense of the word, a ‘relief carving’, in that from the rear he looks quite dramatically different. Very different indeed. You see, when I pictured this piece in my mind’s eye, I had this one pose in mind – rather like a painting, whereby the story is revealed via a single perspective. Of course, Fido is smart enough not to sit squarely behind the door, only to be hit by it once it is flung open; he chooses instead to line himself up with the wall so as to capture the first possible glimpse of his master, benefactor and best friend from the split second it is pushed open.

And since the back of the carving was to serve no purpose whatsoever, I decided to take advantage of the space to cut a large check out of it, round it off and present ‘Fido’s Still Got It’ in Curvilinear relief, which apart from being a bit more interesting than a boring flat surface, conveniently lightened Fido by over 15 lbs., and made him an awful lot easier to pick up and move around, with grip handles appearing where none were before. So, although he does weigh in at a rather hefty 66 lbs., not only is he rather easy to pick up and move, but he’s also robust, too – quite solid, in fact, and well capable of sitting to attention on any floor you care to choose. Don’t bump the vacuum into him, obviously, but a quick wipe with some very mild soapy water and he’ll clean up as nice as can be, just dry him off with a clean cloth and he’s good to go.

As with all of my COLLECTION SERIES Marble Sculpture, Fido has my Mark, his Serial Number, my signature and relevant information carved and etched on the underside of the base. He was the 25th Liberty Collection Sculpture, carved in The Liberty Building that houses The Martin Cooney STONEWORKS.

And the name, Fido? I just thought that it surmised everyone’s house dog. ‘Scamp the Mongrel’ and ‘Gnasher the Spaniel’ were the names of my two, but if I did indeed have this particular best friend to come home to, Fido is what I would most likely name him, because he looks, to me, exactly like … a big old friendly Fido.

Coincidentally ‘Fido’s Still Got It’ marks the halfway point in The Liberty Slab’s splitting and carving – with possibly 25 more carvings to go. I’ll be releasing a few posts in the coming weeks regarding the remarkable sculptural journey that carving a 3-ton block of Colorado Yule Marble has revealed to me, with a summary of all 25 sculptures to date being my next priority on martincooney.com. So please subscribe to my email list to stay intuned, as it were. And, also, please visit The Martin Cooney Stoneworks website at martincooneystoneworks.us, where my business partner and now close friend, Kelley Judd, has put together a marvelous commercial website that I am sure you will enjoy immensely. Just tell him that I sent you!
