If ever a carving of mine captures the very essence of direct method sculpting then Felucca must surely qualify as a top contender. For at the outset of the carving process I found myself quite puzzled by the intricate way this rough block of Colorado Yule Marble had split.  Nevertheless as I began to reduce the shape to correspond to my Curvilinear principles of reductionism I of course had no idea that I was about to carve my take on the fabled river Nile sailing vessel. And before I knew it I was putting the bend in the sail, the lean in the bow, and the tip on the point of the mast.

While this piece may perhaps look a little tippy, I can assure you that she in fact holds a very low center of gravity thanks to the counter balance I carved around the underside of her keel.  The reddish orange spot however proves something of a mystery, and evokes a nice ‘setting sun’ effect against a menacing, thunderstruck sky.
