Part iceberg, part sailing ship, Ice Boat arrived in the late summer of 2014, shortly upon my return from Italy.  And so, with a head still full of sleek sailboats tying-up to the La Spezia jetty, after crossing the Atlantic for the summer Mediterranean season, still vivid in my mind’s eye, I  originally conceived this carving as a vessel with which to capture and transfer light utilizing the brilliant translucent nature of this bright white sliver of Colorado Yule Marble.

I nevertheless opted to carve into the base a small receptacle for the smaller, finer things in life.  Assisted by the vertical gap in the ship’s sails it was my delight to discover the intricate interplay of light between port and starboard, as it were.

But what you do with it, or how you enjoy it is entirely up to you. Favorite sea shells? Rings and things?   A simple votive candle will transform Ice Boat into a lightship by night, and a simple glass ornament will erupt into a blaze of light as light seemingly ‘bends’ around the vertical gap between the two sails. The piece comes with a glass polar bear seemingly returning to his ice cave, which seems fitting, given the carving’s name. It actually belonged to my mother, who brought it home from a holiday in Europe, but upon completion I happened to slip it into the vacant space, and guess what ? It immediately fit like a charm, and the lucky bear has been nestled inside his snug little home ever since. But, you’re welcome to enjoy the spectacle as the light streaks through the vertical space between the two sails, and even through the wafer-thin, pure white marble itself. It really is a sight to see. And I am sure my mum won’t mind. In fact I think she would be delighted.
