To my knowledge Adam was the very first ever Curvilinear Hand Carved Marble Bowl, for at the time that I carved him I had never witnessed the like. Prior to this breakthrough moment I didn’t know if it was even possible for marble to be carved in the round so extraordinarily thinly as this. Very recent and dramatic improvements to diamond blade, and more importantly semi-flexible abrasive disc technology, had enabled me to sculpt marble in ways quite unimaginable to previous generations. Throughout the sculpting process however I feared that Adam – the first bowl of its kind – may well break simply break into pieces. But when I had finished, the dust had settled, and I took a good look at it, the possibilities regarding just where this revolutionary bowl may lead, in sculptural terms, began to unfold. And in a way I suppose, by logical conclusion, so it was that the The Maiden Collection’s stylistic direction was now quite dramatically resolved. Adam, to this day, remains one of my thinnest, and most intriguing, Hand Carved Marble Bowls. Needless to say, as founder member of the Curvilinear Marble Bowl Club, he adores a sunny window, but will greedily make himself quite at home under any strong, direct, light. Shortly following Adam’s completion the second Curvilinear Hand Carved Marble Bowl, who else but Eve? popped into the world, and the great Curvilinear Marble Family, of Direct Method, Reductionist Sculpture, was born. Or, sculpture that is “Light, Portable, and Carved for Full Immersion in the Real World”, as I am often prone to say.
