I picture The Belle as a self-assured young woman stepping out for an evening of fun, dressed to the nines, and basking in the attention she knows that she creates. Together with Venus de Mermaid and Wimbledon (pictured below) the trio serve as The Maiden Collection’s body of Curvilinear female form sculpture.

Prior to laying a tool upon this piece I had noticed the subtle markings woven into what was to become the Belle’s swishy skirt. And so felt rather fortunate as I carved the rough block, and to my delight, these swirly markings stayed with me till the very end, even though, throughout the carving process, I was more than a little wary that I would carve them away.  Her neckless of markings on the other hand appeared in no danger whatsoever.
