Mother of Pearl, The Maiden Collection, Colorado Yule Marble Sculpture by Martin Cooney

Mother of Pearl is the largest of The Maiden Collection bowls by some margin, she also boasts some of the most striking markings, and while the relatively large size of Mother of Pearl initially captures attention,  I find that it is the ‘eye’ that invariably steals the limelight.  Her name stems from the uncanny likeness with Pearl,  a tiny petite little bowl in comparison  –  the lightest of all my hand carved marble bowls to date, and the two of them together do make quite the pairing.

The ‘eyes’ by the way result from a single stripe from one of the darker veins,  or intrusions consisting largely of granite, being sliced by the curve of the bowl itself, thus forming a circle from which, if people’s first reactions are any indication, does indeed resemble a large round eye.  But it is in terms of size that these two bowls differ wildly, with Pearl weighing in a just 11 lbs she represent the smallest of my marble bowls, and  with Mother of Pearl tipping the scales at the other end of the perspective, with a wholesome 48 lbs, she easily grabs the title of largest.  Similarly, whereas Pearl makes for the perfect receptacle for your most treasured items – pearls and such; Mother of Pearl prefers a mound of ice, seafood, champagne, and things of such nature.
