For centuries the question has puzzled local residents and the scientific community alike: just where does the water go as the snow and ice of winter withdraws?

Here I offer conclusive proof that it simply ups and walks away.

Here at 7,300 feet in the Rocky Mountains water is prone to engage in behavior I personally have witnessed nowhere else. And while I’m sure evaporation plays an important role that doesn’t explain some of the elaborate shenanigans displayed by the snow and ice around these parts.

No pools of murky melt-water for our Colorado Rocky Mountain ‘Champagne Ice’.

Here ice doesn’t so much melt, or evaporate, as simply vanish into thin (very thin) air.

Just moments after snapping these pictures this little colony was gone.
