~ Light is Beautiful ~

Little did the thought occur to me, upon the outset of the ‘Moonfish’ carving process, that I was about to create the lightest Liberty Collection sculpture to date, and perhaps more significantly, the lightest COLLECTION SERIES Marble Sculpture of all time. However, I did know that I was going to carve something extremely dainty, along the lines of the previous sculpture that I had just completed. But whereas ‘Duality’ stood as a tall upright window sculpture, with a slight bowl designed to accommodate precious jewelry, earrings, watches and such, this time around I was determined to return to a more classic bowl form, of a style and outline that has served to define my Curvilinear Marble artistic technique.

Hence, ‘Moonfish’ returns the narrative to a relatively large, deep and contained bowl capable of displaying a far wider spectrum of items in a more traditional capacity; fruit, nuts, treats … seashells and little treasures of all kinds. But of course, as with all of my signature Hand Carved Marble Bowls, this distinctly abstract aquatic statement will draw equal, if not more attention when simply positioned in strong direct light in any prominent location, including windowsills (of course) dining room tables, studies, libraries, patios, bedrooms, bathrooms and pretty much anywhere you wish.

Tipping the scales at just 11.4 lbs., ‘Moonfish’, equaling ‘Pearl’, also weighing in at 11.4 lbs., now  shares the record of the lightest of the COLLECTION SERIES’ 91 Marble Sculptures to date, making them both officially the lightest bowls to simply pick up and hold close to your body, as you would a newborn baby and simply carry her from one place to another. She can even accommodate a bed of ice on which to place some fresh oysters, shrimp or any other seafood delicacy … and given her Moonfish design, just how apt would that be!

By the way I knew nothing of this strange warm-blooded moon-shaped fish prior to roughing out the shape of this cute little bowl. But on exploring fish shapes on Google, I discovered all I needed to know for the direction in which to take this, the 24th Liberty Collection carving, along with its name too.  Turns out that Moonfish abound ‘in the deep, open, tropical and temperate waters of the world’s oceans between 300 to 1,000 feet deep, rising closer to the surface at night to hunt squid and krill, returning to deeper, cooler waters during the day, making them pelagic (open ocean) dwellers, but they avoid equatorial waters. It has a rich, creamy taste. The flavor is distinctive, a cross between tuna and swordfish, and is a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids. It’s a lean protein with essential minerals like selenium and phosphorus, and important B vitamins, while being low in sodium.’

‘Moonfish’ leans heavily towards the ‘Jonah’ class of COLLECTION SERIES Marble Bowls, but whereas the latter replicates (in the abstract) a diving whale, with distinctly a whale shaped tail held aloft – the former features the noticeably pointy, spiky tail fins of its namesake ocean dweller.

As with all of my COLLECTION SERIES Marble Sculpture, ‘Moonfish’ displays her Serial Number, SN260202, my Mark, and relevant information carved and etched on the underside of her base.
