I’m not quite sure just what convinced me to take on  what was possibly the roughest, toughest rough block of stone that I have ever tackled, before or since.  So formidable and abundant were Terrible Lizard’s intrusions that it almost seemed at times as if it were the marble that is doing the intruding.

Stark was the contrast between the masses and masses of iron-hard chert, or cooled magma, and that of the Colorado Yule Marble ensnared within it. And so perhaps it wasn’t too surprising to see a formidable creature emerging, considering the sheer amount of brute force and energy I employed during his carving.

Having already explored animal themes, including Swan Wave, Jonah, Guin and Son, and The Demure One,  I opted to accentuate the aggressive shape that this particular block had split into, a very provocative manner, almost menacing manner – which best explains exactly why this carving came into being: this was one terribly tough, reptilian block of Colorado Yule marble transformed into a brute of a rugged beast.

Splitting The Maiden Collection Slab

By this late stage in the carving of The Maiden Collection I had the benefit of no less than 35 consecutive opportunities to explore and develop the unique, and at oft times perplexing properties inherent within a single slab of Yule Marble. And while his smokey gray markings provide for an ideal camouflage as he roams around on his regular hunts, make no mistake, that menacing stare can quite make you j∪Mρ… should it happen to land in your direction.
