By the time Swan Wave arrived (33rd of the 41 Maiden Collection Sculptures) it seemed I just couldn’t stop myself from turning every piece into an animal of some kind. It was August and a summer spent in admiration of the incredible bird life here in the Roaring Fork Valley was beginning to leave a lasting impression.

When the time came to tackle the odd-looking, and slightly fearsome, rough old block of Colorado Yule marble I took great advantage from having enjoyed ample time with which to ponder just exactly what I was going to do with it.   I had long decided this unwieldy block was destined to become a wave, and as things turned out it was to be the last wave of  The Maiden Collection  to be carved;  a family within a collection that includes The Demure One, Things One and Two, Elk Mountain Bowl, Guin and Son, and Genesis… where, of course, it all began.

The Demure One

I suppose that the end result could be viewed as a bowl or a wave, but from the very beginning I was struck by the similarities between this block and the block that produced The Demure One, so in her honor I decided to cut a hole through it.  But what clinched the piece as a swan was the peculiar dot of an eye that began to appear as I worked the wave around its full 180 degrees.  Once I had the eye positioned the rest fell neatly into place.

As with all of my Collection Series marble sculpture, you’ll find Swan Wave’ serial number, 120806, cut into the underside of her base along with my mark (sometimes known as mason’s or banker mark) proudly chiseled right alongside it.
