Vanilla Bean, The Maiden Collection, Colorado Yule Marble Sculpture by Martin Cooney

Whether I was experiencing an ice cream craving as I carved Vanilla Bean I don’t recall, but what materialized as the carving took shape, appeared to me as a huge scoop of vanilla bean swirl.  I was delighted with the tight compactness of Vanilla Bean, plus, she behaved herself from beginning to end, and was pure delight to carve. A very lovely bowl.   The name Vanilla Bean arrived far earlier in the process than the majority of the 41 Maiden Collection sculptures… very early in fact.   Once those delicious looking swirls presented themselves I pounced right away and began sculpting the curves that were to accommodate them.  Vanilla bean was carved during the month of July, 2012.  I remember it being very hot all the while I was working on her.   Pretty soon the vision of a giant ice-cold scoop of Vanilla Bean ice cream rose before me like a frozen mirage in the burning desert.

Sturdy, with a low center of gravity, this lightweight bowl is anything but fragile.   As with all Maiden Collection bowls I carved the rim to be ever so slightly thicker than the wafer thin walls for added durability, allowing them to be used in everyday life.   And as with each of the collection’s 41 sculptures Vanilla Bean has her Serial Number carved into the underside of her base – along with my ‘mark’: the time honored banker mason’s signature.
