Sparrow, The Maiden Collection, Colorado Yule Marble Sculpture by Martin Cooney

After having paid tribute to that other frequent visitor to the garden, the Robin,  I felt I had to redress the balance with a bowl dedicated to my actual all-time favorite bird of all – the humble sparrow.   Over the course of the summer a great many birds descended upon Birdhaven, the Colorado Rocky Mountain Sculpture Garden,  and a good majority of them spend their time squabbling and fighting for territory – but not the sparrows.   If ever there is a more socially amenable bird than the cheerful sparrow I have yet to meet it.   Whether sipping at the birdbath,   or busily nipping away at a flower gone to seed,   they always seemed to be able to get along.   And so it should come as no real surprise that after months spent in admiration of these wonderful,  often overlooked,  little birds one would appear among the ranks of The Maiden Collection.   Sparrow was carved from a block split from the slab’s seam of pure white marble and is therefore related to Longboat, Wimbledon, Titanic, and the other white pieces split and carved from The Maiden Collection’s ten ton slab.
