April and the Great Transition

April in Woody Creek

April snow blankets the car

April is a funny old month here in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. If it’s not snowing the sun burns hot and bright. From one day to the next we never really know just what is going to happen, all we know is to always take along some warm clothes wherever we go because, really… you just never know how low the thermometer is going to dip. Consequently things tend to get put on hold until the weather makes up its mind as to whether it’s still winter, or early, early summer.

Admittedly its a little difficult to get too far ahead of one’s self when it comes to preparing the garden for the coming summer.

These photos were taken on the 17th and in the time since we have experienced just about everything the elements can throw at us.

Even the birds seem a little jaded by it all.

When the weather ‘turns’ at this time of the year most of the migrating birds beat a retreat down valley towards the warmer climes of the Colorado River Valley, but these hardy “American” Robins (not actually robins at all, but a member of the Thrush family) tend to stoically wait it out…

…and what a comical sight they make.

I get the feeling their plans are ‘on hold’ too. “OY, YOU! Where are all the juicy worms?”

Oh well, May lurks just around the corner. Patience my little friends, patience.
