Hand Carved Marble Bowls
R E V I E W
This coming Saturday, August 15th, marks the second of three Summer Sculpture Garden Studio Shows, each of which spotlights a different aspect of my work, and this time around I will be focusing attention on my signature hand carved marble bowls.
Almost from the very outset of my sculptural journey bowls were to play a major, if not pivotal role in the development of my Curvilinear Direct Method. As I systematically broke the Maiden Collection slab of Colorado Yule Marble into workable blocks however, back in the Autumn of 2011, I had no such notions of bowls, masques, beasts, maidens or anything else – I simply needed to break up a ten ton slab of ‘mature’ marble before the onset of another Rocky Mountain winter.
At around 150 to 160 lbs per cubic foot each of the blocks shown below weighed in at several hundred pounds, and so these were again split, until a total of 41 individual carvings were created.
The resulting collection can be viewed by clicking here.
The very first sculpture, Genesis, pictured below, gave glimpse into a world I could hardly have imagined: those unpromising grey blobs opened up to reveal a slice of pure geological time. For caught up and entangled in the pure white marble lay strata after strata of magma intrusions so complex and fascinating that they told an incredible story all of their own. Locked there, at the very moment this former limestone cooled, is a lavish account of the incredible churning, the unfathomable pressures, and the mind-boggling time-frame that conspired to create this most miraculous stone.
I really have no idea just why I went splashing Biblical names to my creations, but it was a little different world back then. I guess I just wanted to throw a bit of gravitas into the occasion.
In the early days of The Maiden Collection the first significant development came in the strange assortment of oddly prehistoric beasts, ethereal wispy shapes, and mysterious wave-like forms that seemed to simply crawl their way out of the marble.
Over time these waves morphed into bowls, the bowls in turn segueing into masks… the masks themselves neatly encapsulating the as yet untapped potential of my Direct Method Curvilinear Sculpture.
The Bowls featured below are all available for purchase. Click on their name and a link will whisk you off to the appropriate Home Page.

Thanks for stopping by. I really hope you can make it to the Studio Show. I do realize though that people are clicking on martincooney.com from all over the globe and so the chances are probably slim. But if you ever get a chance to visit this area please email martincooneyart@gmail.com to schedule your very own personal Studio and Sculpture Garden tour. Let me show you just how these babies are made, where I make them, and explain why I am so very excited by this brand new approach to a very, very old profession.
Now, for the first time ever, unique original marble sculpture is available at a fraction of the weight of traditional carvings, making it the smart choice for practically any art lover. Moving my sculpture is as simple as picking it up and carrying it – no heavy burdensome mass to heave around… I’ve taken care of that. Routinely I take 80 to 90 percent of the weight out of my Curvilinear Marble Sculpture allowing for ease of movement from one place in your home to another.
