My Collection Series Marble Sculpture was Carved to be Light, Portable and Fully Emerged in the Real World
Unlike traditional stone sculpture of similar dimension that can weigh hundreds of pounds and may only be moved with the assistance of heavy lifting gear, my revolutionary Colorado Yule Marble Collection Series was carved to be picked up and carried, allowing easy movement from one vantage point to the next.
Employing the experience and skills gained through years of professional architectural stone carving, where exact standards and precise techniques are the order of the day, I have perfected the skills necessary to carve marble to extraordinary standards of precision and accuracy, resulting in the 67 sculptures of my Collection Series.
The series was sculpted in Woody Creek, three miles from Aspen, utilizing offcuts and marble from the nearby Yule marble quarry located at 9,300 feet above sea level outside of the town of Marble, Colorado. Much of this surplus material was cast aside in the rush for blocks large enough to provide the massive drums for the Lincoln Memorials huge columns.
The collection’s signature bowls developed as I strove to combine form with function in order to display the remarkable quality of the stone itself; Yule being created by contact metamorphism, an extremely rare type of marble superior to that of regional metamorphism in that it was transformed from limestone into marble at much higher temperatures that create a translucent effect when carved as thinly as the bowl’s walls demand.
To date I have sold 29 carvings, gifted 1, leaving 37 remaining for sale. Each sculpture carries a serial number engraved on the underside of the base, along with my mason’s mark. They all possess their own web page located right here at martincooney.com, to be found in the header above via the various gallery tabs.
Now, I am seeking gallery representation in order to sell the rest. What I am looking for is to present the remaining Collection Series sculptures in their entirety, or as many as is feasible, in order to present the work with context.

Thank you for scrolling all the way to this point, all that remains is to sum up my signature Collection Series Marble Sculpture with a few words regarding my motivation in carving 67 lumps of Colorado Yule marble rough blocks into the sculpture you have just reviewed.
Having carved many tons of stone during the past 23 years, much of it commercial architectural masonry, entrance signs, fireplaces and the like as a banker mason, I more than anyone am acutely aware of the impracticalities concerning the sheer amount of weight involved with projects of any size. Therefore, it was my intention from the start to bring marble sculpture into the modern world by utilizing modern tools and equipment to sculpt original concepts into portable artwork that may easily be picked up and moved around in a similar manner to practically every other kind of sculpture you can think of.
So, by using the ‘direct method’ first devised by the great Constantin Brancusi, I set about carving in a similar manner, but with weight reduction a top priority so as to minimize the difficulties in handling such a body of work. And in doing so, I soon discovered the amazing properties held within the Colorado Yule marble itself, and gradually perfected the art of carving it so thinly that light permeated the carving in a manner I had never seen before. Which in turn set me on a course of producing work that I titled ‘Curvilinear’. And the rest, as they say, is history.
