The Ice Basilica: Part One, Zero Degrees

A  Most Exquisite Kind of Cold

Only when the temperature gets really cold – and I mean really, really cold, is it possible to create the sort of ice sculpture that makes living here in Woody Creek so much fun. At this elevation, 7,300 feet in the Colorado Rocky Mountains, water is liable to do all sorts of things…. anything it puts its mind to as it turns out.

And so… come this lovely time of year I usually turn my attentions to various icy projects, just because I love seeing exactly what Ol’ Mother Nature will conjure; I really have no idea just what she will get up to next.

Let’s face it – when the thermometer shows zero degrees Fahrenheit first thing in the morning, which thankfully it has of late, it means that the low hit perhaps 11 below only a few hours earlier… which of course means that at last:
